Recreational Benefits

Active Lives, Relaxing Pastimes

Continuous hike-and-bike trails will connect 15 miles of river, providing a safe and healthy way to explore our community. There will be opportunities for a myriad of adventures between San Antonio’s beautiful missions on the south side of town and the picnic areas and other attractions of Brackenridge Park on the north side.

New picnic areas and overlooks, canoe and kayak landings, children’s playgrounds, sports fields, and athletic stretching stations will offer both rest areas and new activity centers. Just imagine:

  • New trails along both sides of the river’s banks making it possible to walk or ride your bike all the way from Brackenridge Park to the missions. (In the Downtown River Walk area, it will be necessary to leave the river level and travel briefly at street level to reconnect to the new project reaches.)
  • Birding opportunities will abound in the newly restored habitat areas of the Mission Reach, and eventually the Park Segment of the Museum Reach.
  • New canoe and kayak landings. Openings in new limestone dams will encourage longer rides in the Mission Reach.
  • Special fishing areas providing easy access to the increased fish population.
  • New picnic areas, neighborhood parks, and sports fields for baseball and soccer will create places for families to gather, and for communities to strengthen.
