Downtown ReachThe River Walk: A Colorful CenterThe beautiful downtown River Walk is world-famous for its 2 miles of shops, restaurants, hotels, and nightlife, all accessible by colorful barges. When City leaders realized that the river had undercut its channel walls and threatened to undermine the foundations of several buildings along the Paseo del Rio, they initiated the San Antonio River Improvements Project (SARIP) in January, 2001. Completed in October, 2002, this phase of the project stabilized the riverbed and rock-lined walls, and added a new pocket park and public art to what will remain the heart of San Antonio’s new linear park. ![]() Nicole Fruge, San Antonio Express-News The San Antonio River Walk is well established as a top tourist destination, and it generates significant revenue for the San Antonio community. Eagleland Project: Reused, Restored, RehabilitatedThe Eagleland Reach is a short segment of the SARIP, just south of downtown, extending from Guenther Street to Lone Star Boulevard. It passes through two historic neighborhoods that are burgeoning centers for restoration and the arts. The stately homes in the King William district date back to San Antonio’s first German settlers, and the Blue Star Arts Complex has created an artists’ community through adaptive uses of former industrial buildings. ![]() Nicole Frugé, San Antonio Express-News San Antonio River Improvements Project (SARIP) Construction Facts
