More Places to Come Together

Through specially designed “gateways,” many neighborhoods will be linked to the river, and to the larger San Antonio community, thanks to the San Antonio River Improvements Project.

At the heart of new urban design is the concept of “walk-able neighborhoods” where safety and easy access by foot to retail, businesses, and recreation are key elements.  Green spaces and open areas provide significant quality of life and economic value to neighborhoods; and a number of those are planned near river gateways.

Neighborhood Enhancements

  • Pedestrian-friendly plazas and gateways will be constructed at specific sites in all reaches.
  • Several neighborhood pocket parks will be refurbished and connected to the project; fountains and waterworks may be added to enhance them.
  • Innovative “green” and “blue” streets are exciting concepts being considered in several neighborhoods.
