Why is the River Foundation raising money for this project?
The estimated $250 million budgeted by the designers of the San Antonio River Improvements Project (SARIP) includes only the construction of basic infrastructure, such as channel widening, sidewalks, flood control measures and ecosystem restoration. The private money raised by the San Antonio River Foundation will pay for the enhancements and amenities that provide the unique cultural, aesthetic, and recreational character to make the improved river truly first rate.

What types of enhancements are you raising money for?
The master plan identifies more than 100 projects, including footbridges, overlooks, pocket parks, public art, amphitheaters, outdoor classrooms, walking and biking trails, restored wetlands and marshes, and more. Historical elements include the Mission portals, a pedestrian bridge to be placed at Roy Smith Street and a Chinese calligraphy wall from the old HemisFair grounds.

How much money has the River Foundation raised?
Our overall goal is to raise $50 million for the entire San Antonio River Improvements Project (SARIP). Having just completed the first phase of our fundraising efforts, we already have received donations worth more than 25 percent of our total goal.

How long will it take you to raise the money? What happens if you don’t raise the money?
The San Antonio River Foundation has already made significant progress toward reaching its goal of $50 million over the course of the project. Since the entire San Antonio River Improvements Project (SARIP) will not be completed for another five to seven years, we are confident that there will be ample time to raise the full amount needed to fulfill the vision for the project. The SARIP has a great deal of support from the San Antonio community, so we anticipate donations to reflect the community’s commitment to the project.

Who are your biggest donors?
AT&T was the River Foundation’s lead donor at $5 million, and we have received many other generous donations as well.

Do you take individual donations?
Yes! Contributions are always accepted and appreciated.

Is this an extension of the River Walk, with more restaurants, nightclubs and shops?
The San Antonio River Improvements Project (SARIP) is a linear park to be enjoyed by the entire community. Rather than replicating the River Walk’s many tourist attractions, the Museum Reach portion of the project will offer access to cultural and recreational destinations north of downtown. The Mission Reach section of the project will be a restored natural ecosystem featuring myriad recreational opportunities.
