Museum Reach: An Outdoor Art Gallery Within Nature

A fairytale waterfall grotto, giant glittering fish swimming in the air, prisms of color swaying in the breeze and a restored historic footbridge – these are just a few of the River Foundation’s creative contributions to the Museum Reach.

Less flashy but equally as important, the River Foundation provided funding for extensive native plant landscaping, expanded walkways and improved lighting along the 1.3 mile pathway, which opened in May, 2009.

The section of the San Antonio River Improvements Project (SARIP) that stretches from Lexington Avenue to Grayson Street is the Urban Segment of the Museum Reach (commonly referred to simply as The Museum Reach). Non-commercial and quiet, it meanders between the iconic River Walk, past the San Antonio Museum of Art and completes its turn at the Pearl multi-use complex.

The San Antonio River Foundation raised nearly $12 million in private funds to enhance the Museum Reach with improved landscaping, the turning basin at Pearl, a restored pedestrian bridge, and 11 new works of public art created by local, national and internationally known artists.

Integrating artistic expression with the natural beauty of the river itself, the Museum Reach is a vibrant daytime stroll that becomes more magical at night as the spark of artistic genius reflects off the rivers rippling surface.
