River Foundation Expands Board of Directors, Adds Character To River Project

San Antonio (August 13, 2007) — As the San Antonio River Improvements Project (SARIP) continues to make headway, the San Antonio River Foundation continues to grow as well by adding two new members to the team. The Foundation recently welcomed the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s President-Elect Richard Perez and USAA’s Senior Vice President of eCommerce and Marketing Counsel Brad Ipema to its Board of Directors.

“We are very excited to welcome these two highly qualified professionals to our team,” said San Antonio River Foundation Board President Edward “Sonny” Collins, III. “Their unique perspectives and insights will help immensely as we move forward with planning and overseeing enhancements for the River Improvements Project.”

Established in 2003, the San Antonio River Foundation is dedicated to providing cultural and visually appealing enhancements and amenities for the river expansion to ensure that the project becomes a unique recreational and cultural oasis for citizens and visitors alike. As participants in the planning, design and development stages of the SARIP, the River Foundation will help incorporate cultural and aesthetic elements to ensure that the completed project will be an exceptional community park that embodies the unique character of the city.

“The river is a city landmark, and its expansion will mean great things for San Antonio,” said new River Foundation board member Richard Perez. “It is crucial to maintain the visual appeal and integrity of the landscape surrounding the river project as it continues to develop,”

A San Antonio native, Perez returned to the city in 2001 after serving the City of Laredo as the assistant to the city manger and the deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as a special assistant. Perez served two consecutive terms as councilman for San Antonio’s District 4 and currently works with his family’s small business, Fairway Landscape and Nursery, Inc., as vice president of business development.

Brad Ipema brings an extensive legal background in financial services and marketing to the River Foundation. For eight years, Ipema served Wachovia Corporation in Charlotte, N.C., managing the privacy, intellectual property and e-commerce group. He also worked with the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and served as an attorney in the Office of Treasury General Counsel for the U.S. Department of the Treasury in Washington, D.C.

The San Antonio River Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization that works to secure community involvement and financial resources to enhance the natural beauty, recreational use and public appreciation of the San Antonio River and its tributaries in Bexar, Wilson, Karnes and Goliad Counties. Since its inception in 2003, the San Antonio River Foundation has been actively involved in the San Antonio River Improvements Project, a multi-year plan to restore and enhance 13 miles of the San Antonio River both north and south of downtown.
