San Antonio River Foundation Welcomes College President to Board of Directors

(December 12, 2007) SAN ANTONIO — With an eye on the future, the San Antonio River Foundation continues to bolster its board of directors, welcoming President of Palo Alto College Dr. Ana Margarita “Cha” Guzman as its newest board member.

“We are very excited about Cha’s addition to the board,” said Edward “Sonny” Collins, III, San Antonio River Foundation board president. “Dr. Guzman’s knowledge and leadership experience as well as her strong voice in the Hispanic community will provide the board with a unique and valuable perspective. We are very much looking forward to working with her.”

The San Antonio River Foundation is responsible for providing the San Antonio River Improvements Project (SARIP) with the unique cultural, aesthetic, and recreational character that will make it a truly exceptional community gem unlike any other city park in the nation. While public entities such as Bexar County, the city and the San Antonio River Authority will fund the basic infrastructure improvements, the Foundation will fund the amenities such as public art, parks, bike paths, historic elements and other attractions that will make the 13-mile linear park a recreational and cultural oasis for citizens and visitors alike.

“I am honored to be working with such an influential organization like the San Antonio River Foundation” said Dr. Guzman, president of Palo Alto College and recent board of directors inductee. “Through the Foundation’s foresight and passion, the San Antonio River Improvements Project is going to be a milestone initiative for the city, and I am so proud that I can be apart of that effort.”

A native of Cuba, Dr. Guzman has been in educational administration for more than 30 years and is currently the first female president of Palo Alto College. During the Clinton administration, Dr. Guzman served as a Senior Advisor to Education Secretary Richard Riely, and she also served as the chair of President Clinton’s White House Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans from 1993 to 2000.

The San Antonio River Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization that works to secure community involvement and financial resources to enhance the natural beauty, recreational use and public appreciation of the San Antonio River. Since its inception in 2003, the San Antonio River Foundation has been actively involved in the San Antonio River Improvements Project, a multi-year plan to restore and enhance 13 miles of the San Antonio River both north and south of downtown.
