Transforming Steel to Ribbons

(San Antonio) – Can it be done? Absolutely. In fact, it’s transforming this very moment!
The San Antonio River Foundation has commissioned well-known local artists Rolando Briseno and George Schroeder to transform 4 bridges across the Museum Reach of the river into beautiful and inspiring works of art. These street level works of art will let people know that something special is close by, and our hope is that they will lure even more people down to experience the beauty of the river in the Museum Reach. One of the Foundation goals is to help celebrate our river and its unique spirit and character. Projects like these help carry out this mission.
George Schroeder's two railing projects will 'book-end' the landmark Grotto near the Pearl and provide an ornate and abstract, visual dynamic between Camden and Newell with sculptural references to flowing water, aquatic plants and the complex forms found throughout our natural world. On both Camden and Newell, Schroeder is transforming rigid plates of steel into twisting ribbons of overlapping and flowing form.  At Camden, these forms are integrated into an existing steel handrail; while at Newell, they will act as a screen running along the concrete rails. Camden is already complete and has received rave reviews!
See Mr. Schroeder add the final touches to his artwork on Newell Street Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. Join us on river level across the river from the grotto for refreshments and an opportunity to meet the artist as he explains the vision behind the latest addition to the Museum Reach.  Additionally, Rolando Briseno’s ‘dynamics of water' inspiration for the sculptural forms at Brooklyn will be displayed.

Native San Antonian George Schroeder's large-scale metal sculptures can be seen in San Antonio, Austin and Houston as well as Florida, Tennessee and even Iceland.
